Description:
All across New York State, issues of housing affordability and supply are being discussed with concern. Producing more safe, quality, and reasonably priced housing more efficiently has become a priority in almost every community in the State. The need to build affordable, resilient, and sustainable places for people to live and work in New York has been labeled a crisis. Addressing this crisis will not succeed unless we advance the best practices of housing development.
CNU New York is coordinating this event to assemble a full range of stakeholders to help accelerate the construction of homes while creating great places to live throughout New York State. We have also invited the state chapters of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as well as planning groups such as PLACE Initiative, Vision Long Island, the Pace Land Use Law Center, the Housing Action Council as well as elected and appointed officials from Village, Town, County, and State levels.
Please join us in a fully participatory quest for solutions to the issues. This will be a working Summit: we are planning for breakthroughs to come from small break-out sessions, rather than speeches and lectures.
Our registration fee is $125 private sector and $75 public sector; $ 50 for students and $100 for virtual attendance. This includes lunches and a reception. Registered attendees will receive an updated agenda, logistics, and lodging contacts, as we complete these items. Link to register:

Schedule:
The Summit will pursue four tracks, with plenaries followed by working sessions where all stakeholders in the development process can advance the review, approval, funding, design, and construction processes.
TRACK 1: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Communities with underutilized, existing infrastructure that can accommodate population growth are best situated to grow while protecting the environment and climate. Track 1 will develop regulatory guidance for communities that want to grow sustainably, with resilience and a healthy economy.
TRACK 2: BEST PRACTICES FOR ALL HOUSING TYPES
Housing types need to match the range of household types and context (hamlet, village, city). “Missing Middle” -low rise multi family- is a scale of development that could be welcome in much of the State. Track 2 will develop tools for ordinances, codes, policies, and SEQR compliance to advance more housing types.
TRACK 3: REVITALIZING EXISTING COMMUNITIES AND DOWNTOWNS
State policies support communities welcoming population and tax base growth after years of exodus. State and local decisions can support re-population if accompanied by
new jobs, and more quality housing. Track 3 will develop strategies for re-population, using existing infrastructure and compelling mixed use, walkable development.
TRACK 4: CREATING EQUITABLE, AFFORDABLE, AND COMPLETE PLACES
Housing policy should address historic injustice and inclusion. Communities face erosion in their economy and services, when the people who work there, and their own children, cannot afford to live there. Track 4 will develop models for communities to provide inclusion through affordability and more complete land uses.
